Assessment

(1) A component of assessment (20%) for this class is:

  • Being in class every session.
  • Actively participating in class every session. This means:
    • Presenting when asked.
    • Actively listening to presentations of other students
    • Actively asking questions or making suggestions related to other student project presentations.
    • Actively working on class problem activities.

20% of the total grade for this class will be for the above activities. Most students will obtain this 20% simply by being present and being active each and every class session. If the instructor assesses you as falling behind in this regard they will speak to you and ask you to rectify your less than active participation. 

(2) The remaining 80% of the final grade is for reports: mid-semester writeup and end-of-semester writeup of weekly project work  (40% each x 2). You may work in pairs for submission of the mid-semester and end-of-semester writeups.

You are encouraged to use AI in the form of Large Language Models such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, to assist you to write stronger, clearer reports. However, simply cutting and pasting output from AI as your own work, with no input from you, is a form of plagiarism, and is regarded as cheating. The instructor reserves the right to orally examine any student on the the authenticity of their written work if the instructor has well-formulated reasons for thinking the submitted work may not be original. 

Due Dates

Mid-semester writeup: Friday October 10, 2025

End-of-semester writeup: Friday December 12, 2025

Late assignments will not be accepted: this is non-negotiable.

Attendance

Attendance in class is required: 3 or more unexplained absences may result in a grade of F without further discussion. Persistent gross lateness will be regarded as absence: the instructor will provide a personal warning in cases of persistent gross lateness.

Copying

Copying other people’s work, or quoting other’s work without attribution is plagiarism and can incur severe penalties, including loss of immigration status and expulsion from the University. Please read the University integrity policy and do not plagiarize.
